Overview of Mathematics Curriculum

Our Math curriculum provides students the opportunity to study a broad range of topics, including Numbers and Operations; Geometry, Spatial Sense, and Measurement; Patterns, Functions, and Algebra; Data Analysis, Statistics, and Probability; Representation; and Reasoning in a problem-solving centered, integrated approach. In each course, students explore the language of algebra, geometry, and other areas of mathematics in verbal, tabular, graphical, and symbolic form. Problem-solving activities and applications encourage students to model patterns and relationships with variables and functions, and to construct, draw, measure, and classify geometric figures. Appropriate technology, from manipulatives to calculators and application softwares, are used regularly for instruction and assessment.

Mathematics Courses

Math A1 (6 periods per week.) . This is an initial course for students who have been identified at admission to have poor math skills, based upon diagnostic exam results, transcript history, and in-person interview. Identified students are placed in this course regardless of the number of Math credits they have previously earned. The course focuses on basic mathematics concepts, such as numbers and operations, reasoning, polynomials and algebraic expressions, equations, geometry and measurement. Since many of the students in this course are foreign-born, their teachers are provided with intensive training on second language acquisition methodologies, approaches, and techniques.

Math A2/3 (double-period course) . This is a Math A Regents Prep Course and is offered for students who have passed Math A1, or have failed the Math A Regents in their previous schools or are scheduled to take the Math A Regents for the first time. It is an integrated course in algebra, geometry and measurement, statistics and probability, and reasoning and problem solving. Students are required to take and pass the Math A Regents to earn credits in this course.

Math B1 and Math B2 . These are singleton courses for students who have already passed the Math A Regents. Math B1 broadens the concepts in Math A and Math B2 focuses on new concepts such as Transformation Geometry, Exponential and Logarithmic Functions, Trigonometric Functions, Graphs, and Applications, Complex Numbers, and Advanced Statistics. Students have the option to take the Math B Regents.

AP Math (College Board). This calculus course is for students who have scored 85 or better in the Math Regents and have earned Math A and B credits.
